Old boats:

so what’s the

Before trucks and even railroads, waterways were the arteries of American commerce.  Wooden boats shipped goods across the ocean, moved raw materials along the coast, trawled the offshore fishing banks and whisked passengers from here to there.

Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, today only a handful of these majestic vessels survive.

Maine’s collection is unique.  While many coastal cities boast an old tall ship (usually associated with a museum), rarely - if ever - do they leave the dock.

The Maine boats still work for a living.  These vessels - 80, 90, 130 years old - spend six months of every year under sail.  Few other historical relics can turn a profit in their original industry.
